Curriculum, as defined in the UDL literature, has four parts: instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments. UDL is intended to increase access to learning by reducing physical, cognitive, intellectual, and organizational barriers to learning, as well as other obstacles.

Provides means of representation. The way facts are gathered. How we categorize what we see, hear, and read. Located in the back of the brain, recognition networks enable us to identify and interpret patterns of sound, light, taste, smell, and touch. These networks enable us to recognize voices, faces, letters, and words, as well as more complex patterns, such as an author's style and nuance, and abstract concepts like justice. The UDL framework provides guidance for using technology to support that balance. Bottom of Form.

The UDL-IRN working with the Michigan Integrated Technology Supports (MITS) and in collaboration with CAST has identified four critical elements intended to serve as a foundation for UDL implementation and research. Educators aligning instruction to UDL must minimally include each of the four critical elements shown below.

UDL helps educators design curriculum that meets the needs of all learners.• Brain research shows that the brain is made up of 3 networks; recognition network, strategic network, and affective network. A Brief Overview.

The UDL Guidelines OR 3 Principles of UDL In order to meet the needs of ALL students , we need to incorporate strategies into our lessons that utilize a student’s 3 brain networks. CAST has developed the 3 principles of UDL, which correspond to each of the 3 brain networks described above, to help educators develop quality lesson plans that enhance learning and use each network.

Welcome to the Intro to UDL resource blog for HCPSS.. We hope these resources will help prepare you to meet the challenge of engaging all learners with diverse needs, abilities and backgrounds and will provide you with practical, hands-on solutions for reaching and teaching 21st century learners. A Brief Overview. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) emerged from the architectural concept of universal design. Ron Mace, North Carolina State University, envisioned universal design as a means to promote the design of products and environments that would appeal to all people, yet meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to provide access for individuals with Figure 1 illustrates the main networks and principles of the UDL. All brains share these characteristics but individual brains differ significantly. This has important implications for teaching.

The Strategic Network: This task-oriented network addresses the how of learning, or how a learner can express what they have learned.
